submediant

The submediant is the sixth degree of the major or minor scale ('sub' in the sense of less important, compare with subdominant; 'mediant' in the sense of midway between the subdominant and tonic as the mediant proper is between the tonic and dominant). Submediant also refers to any triad (or seventh chord) constructed on the submediant as the root.
