The posterior cricoarytenoid muscles, of which there is a pair within the larynx, are the only muscles that abduct – in other words, open the space between – the vocal folds. They arise from the lamina (plate) of the cricoid cartilage and insert into the muscular process of the arytenoid cartilages.
