pause signs

A variety of pause signs are used music. The fermata, a curved line over a dot, indicates that the note, chord, or rest over which it appears is to be prolonged at the performer's will.

A fermata is occasionally placed over a bar line, indicating a short silence. Another use sometimes made of the sign is to intimate that the composition is finished; it is then placed over the final double bar and corresponds to 'finis' in a book.
